This paper builds on research on the institutional and organizational pressures faced inside schools to explore both how conventional schooling affects efforts to support learning outside schools and how out of school learning might have some impact on learning inside schools. To do so, the study documents the evolution of three organizations in New York City that launched arts-, play-, and community-based learning programs outside schools that have taken advantage of opportunities work in local public schools. In the process, these organizations have had to make difficult decisions how much to accommodate the demands of the regular school day, often without being able to predict how these decisions may affect their chances for further development in the future.
