The Experience of DACAmented Students Studying Abroad

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom West

Abstract

This qualitative study examined the experiences of undocumented Mexican college students who participated in a Dreamer Study Abroad program. With the enactment of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy by the Department of Homeland Security, the educational and personal experiences of undocumented immigrant students have taken a new dimension. DACA is changing the educational experience for youth, not only by increasing work stability, but also providing the opportunity to study abroad and reconnect with their roots and family members in their native country. This work captures this complex travel experience as DACAmented students continue to study abroad to seek educational and personal opportunities. This work develops an understanding of how students experience racism, xenophobia, and microaggressions throughout this process.
