A New Way of Seeing: Using Photovoice to Promote a Possibilities Perspective for Marginalized Youth

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

This project is an exploratory concept paper of a critical service learning-focused adaptation of the photovoice methodology for use with marginalized youth that promotes a possibilities perspective of education in schools and communities. I propose that an adaptation of traditional photovoice methodology that emphasizes assets and strengths, as opposed to highlighting injustices and inequities, is one way to move beyond deficit thinking – from thinking about what’s wrong to thinking about what’s right. What this offers Academia is a “new way of seeing” non-traditional education research methodologies and the potential this new perspective may have for marginalized students, schools, and communities.
