This study analyzed the discourse of pairs collaboratively playing a new version of the geometry game “Noobs vs Leets” in order to explore the relationship between game mechanics, elaboration and learning outcomes. Twenty 5th through 7th graders were included in the study. The game was created to teach players the concepts of complementary and supplementary angles and the angle sum theorem of triangles. Analysis of pair interactions found that higher levels of elaborative reasoning were predictive of learning outcomes. A qualitative analysis of problem solving episodes also indicated that pair interactions as well as problem solving strategies were impacted by the game mechanics and task structure
