Experiences of International Students of African Descent Attending a Predominantly White Institution

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Seventh Floor, Harlem

Abstract

Experiences of profiling, racism and discrimination are a part of life for students of color in the United States. International students of African descent are influenced by stereotypes and inadequate historical context of African American experiences, yet they are also seen within institutions as students of color. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with international students of African descent attending a PWI in the US. Findings reveal experiences and perceptions of race/ethnic-based biases during their educational experiences.
