Can Preservice Teacher Experiences Predict Future Employment?

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

Through the use of a longitudinal data set, This study examines whether pre-service teacher characteristics are predictive of a teacher entering the teaching profession. In particular, the study examines whether the pre-service teacher was successful as defined by having graduated with at least a Bachelor’s Degree in a teaching field, passed all licensure exams, and was employed. Results found that students who participated in a full year student teaching experience had a higher likelihood of being successful than students who were in a single semester teaching experience. In addition, students with higher grade point averages and first generation students were also significantly more likely to be successful after completion of the program.
