This arts-based educational research study employed Photovoice as part of a yearlong mixed methods study of high school students’ critical and creative thinking in a photography after-school program in a large city region. Students were interviewed on the topic of artistic creativity and creative self-efficacy while viewing photographs they identified as their best work during the academic year of 2016-2017. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded using the evaluation and descriptive coding methods in two coding cycles (Miles, Huberman, & Saldana, 2014) to identify salient themes. Results focusing on student perceptions of creative self-efficacy, creative mindsets, and creative effort are discussed in light of advancing art-based research methods.
