Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Dual-Language Immersion Program for Supporting Literacy and Mathematics Development

Mon, April 16, 4:05 to 6:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Seventh Floor, Chelsea/Gotham Room

Abstract

The purpose of a Two-Way Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program is to provide instruction in both English and Spanish for two purposes: (a) to provide Spanish-speaking English Language Learners (ELLs) an opportunity to immerse into English Instruction, and (b) to model the Spanish language for native English speakers so they have an opportunity to acquire a new language. In this study, we evaluate a DLI program implemented on two campuses within a school district and analyze its differential effect on achievement in comparison to English-only instruction. In addition, we explore student- and campus-level differences that contribute to observed variance in achievement.
