Linguistic Conscientization in the New Destination South

Abstract

Demographic changes in the New Destination South have required schools and communities to adapt to new immigrant and EL populations. This mixed-methods study documents participants' linguistic conscientization as they engaged in ESOL-based professional development. Their linguistic conscientization facilitated their enactment of instruction that augmented students' participation and critical awareness of the role of language in society.
