This study explored influences of personality and social relationships on subjective well-being (SWB) across cultures. SWB and happiness are similar concepts Participants were 271 Americans, 289 Chinese, and 268 Brazilians college students. Structural Equation Modeling was applied to analyze the data. Results showed significant differences in globalization across the three samples. These cross-cultural differences were caused by (1) Americans showed significantly stronger effect of satisfaction of life and a weaker effect of extroversion on SWB, compared to Brazilian and Chinese, (2) Chinese showed a significantly weaker effect than those of the U.S. and Brazilian samples in the effect of neuroticism on SWB. Results are discussed from the perspective of applying multicultural counseling to the practice of well-being focused interventions.
