The current study investigates the validity of a university-level ESL placement assessment using a mixed-methods design. The study adapts the test validation framework developed by Bachman and Palmer (1996) and broadens the framework to also investigate face validity (FV) by exploring examinees’ and examiners’ judgments. Results from the study show an overall positive picture about the validity of the placement tests, though some caveats also follow. The broad framework affords us a comprehensive understanding of the validity of the placement assessment and the construct of validity in general. The use of mixed methods also enables us to generate a more elaborated assessment of the validity of the placement assessment than what a single research method can provide.
