One of the challenges of school climate policies in Chile has been to promote a democratic school management rather than punitive ones. However, research has shown that punitive practices have been considered acceptable of an authoritarian culture even when it has negative effects on school climate. This paper examined the effect of the perception of punitive practices on the perception of school climate practices in 2841 students from 130 urban schools in Chile. Findings showed that a higher perception of punitive practices was associated with a greater perception of inclusive, democratic and peacefulness school climate. We discuss the implications of these findings in terms of policy and practice.
