This action research explores the benefits of implementing experiential learning, specifically project-based learning and outdoor education, in my daily high school Social Studies instruction. I addressed two questions: How do students perceive quality of learning through experiential activities? Do students gain a greater connection between lesson and personal life/real world application through experiential learning opportunities? The study was conducted in a British Columbia school district during the fall of the 2016-2017 school year. Data were collected through survey and journal submissions. Survey results indicated that student perceived their learning experience more positively in the experiential learning pedagogy. Student journals also indicated an increase in the rates of student connection between material learned and life outside of the classroom.
