Latina/o Representation in Music Education Scholarship

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fourth Floor, O'Neill

Abstract

Many music education researchers have claimed to adopt tenets of socially just, inclusive, and/or multicultural education to serve all students. Given that Latina/os represent a large percentage of the U.S. public school population and of American musics, we asked how they are represented and potentially served by music education scholarship and practice. We specifically ask what methodological choices music education researchers made to explore topics impacting Latina/o learners and professionals and how they draw on Latina/o funds of knowledge. We hope that this literature review serves as a reference for the larger music education community and direction for those who aim to more equitably serve all music learners and colleagues.
