A cross-disciplinary faculty committee sponsored by the faculty senate of a large public research university conducted a study to identify characteristics of effective teaching with a goal to improve and align Student Evaluations of Teaching (SETs) to reflect the identified characteristics. Faculty representatives from a variety of disciplines – education, engineering, business, the arts, and the humanities - worked closely with the university’s Center for Teaching and Faculty Excellence, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, and the Provost’s office. This presentation will focus on the processes used in identifying measurable indicators of teaching effectiveness for faculty evaluation, obtaining stakeholder feedback, and examining the resulting data. We will also engage participants in discussion and seek feedback on our study.
