Much research reveals that family engagement in schools promotes positive outcomes for children in an array of arenas, both psychosocial and academic. This paper outlines the development of a Family Engagement and Empowerment Model designed to address barriers to engagement. Our findings are derived from formal and informal focus groups and interviews with school staff and family members supplemented by literature and decades of experience of the researchers. The core components of the model include: (1) Responsive programming; (b) family-school connections; (c) expanded communication; (d) community connections; (e) collaborative programming; and (f) family leadership. The Family Engagement and Empowerment Model provides innovative strategies for effective family engagement with diverse families in schools.
