The Spectrum of Textual Relevance: Young Men of Color Reflect on a Decade of Reading Experiences

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The intention of this study is to investigate how a group of young adult men of color, who attended the same single-sex school in New York City and participated ten years ago in a qualitative study on textual relevance, have transformed as readers and consumers of text since initial interviews. By drawing upon notions of reader response and theories addressing the complexities of identity, this study explores how the young men do and do not find personal value or significance in what they read – and how their responses now compare to their responses as early adolescents. This study can impact K-12 education by providing insight on the literacy trajectories of successful Black and Latino young men.
