Struggle and Persistence in a Mastery-Based Learning Environment for Mathematics

Mon, April 16, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Westin New York at Times Square, Floor: Ninth Floor, New Amsterdam Room

Abstract

The self-paced nature of mastery-based digital learning--in which individuals advance at their own pace by demonstrating mastery of specific learning objectives--has the potential to increase efficiency and effectiveness of learning, but also brings potential for many students to fall behind. To promote equity, designers need to anticipate specific struggles that learners will have and the kinds of supports (from the system or other classroom resources) that are necessary to keep students on track. We conducted a qualitative analysis of student struggles and teacher practices in mathematics classrooms that used a mastery-based system to practice procedural skills. We use the findings as an orienting framework for design considerations for increasing support for effective learning in mastery-based systems.
