The professional challenge this paper examines is how Dewey’s (1909) moral training and Dewey’s (1916) democracy in education may be synthesised to provide a framework to empower education system leaders to live a good life. The framework makes a new contribution to knowledge because it facilitates a leader’s critique of their fears that are exchanged for virtues that allows them to live a good life as mature citizens (Adler, 1941). The leaders can then build capacity in the education system for staff, parents and students to use the framework to rationalise how they might self regulate the exchange of their fears for virtues to live a good life in community.
