This project examines the relationship between historical consciousness and racialization for Filipinx American undergraduate students. The Philippines was a colony of the United States for over fifty years, and according to the 2010 U.S. Census, Filipinx Americans are the largest Asian group (including multi-racial Filipinxs). However, most people do not learn anything about Philippine history or Filipinxs in formal schooling contexts, and are hard pressed to name a famous Filipinx person, much less name a Filipinx food dish. This research investigates the ways that Filipinx American undergraduates are impacted by this invisibility and lack of historical and cultural consciousness and how this shapes their process of racialization.
