Since its inception at the turn of the century, the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has been rapidly evolving to meet the increasing demands of a technologically-dependent and globally competitive society. While K-12 education is refocusing curricular emphasis toward STEM education, teachers in the classroom are facing multiple challenges in designing engaging STEM units which aligns to multiple standards, and simultaneously measures student progress. These challenges create a very daunting process for many teachers who naturally compartmentalize STEM content and skills. This study uses secondary classroom examples to explore the need for reconceptualizing the notion of STEM integration using core principles of systems thinking.
