Mon, April 16, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The study evaluated the effectiveness of the Mentoring and Professionalism in Training program (MAP-IT), an interprofessional faculty development curriculum designed to enhance clinicians’ humanistic mentoring skills. Two consecutive 10 month cohorts of nurses and physicians completed the MAP-IT program. Each cohort consisted of small group work, experiential learning, and critical reflection. High potential mentors demonstrated significant increases in perceptions of humanistic teaching skills. During objective structured teaching simulations, significant increases were also found in high potential mentors’ mentoring skills. Qualitative analyses revealed themes of the program to be mentorship, humanism, mindfulness, self-care, and attention to differing perspectives of participants.
The MAP-IT program was determined to be a feasible strategy to positively impact the personal and professional development of nurses and physicians.
