This paper offers the initial findings from a critical ethnographic study of everyday experience of trans, genderqueer, and queer (TGQ) in New York City. Pulling on data collected during a series of mobile interviews with 12 young people, analysis is driven through queer theory, queer of color critique, place-based critical ethnography, and philosophical theories about ‘experience’ to examine how TGQ participants come to know about their relationship to the structures, affects, discourses, and bodies that comprise the city through which they move. Particular attention is paid to reflection on queered notions of time and space—both how TGQ youth experience the passing of time as they locate themselves in various locations throughout the city.
