Using Lesson Study With Preservice Teacher Candidates: A Literature Review

Abstract

Lesson study is an approach to teacher development that involves collaborative lesson planning, teaching, and analysis. It has recently been explored as an innovative approach to supporting preservice teacher candidates through practice-based teacher education opportunities. This systematic literature review analyzed and synthesized 24 articles that used lesson study with preservice teacher candidates. The articles were coded based on (a) participants, (b) research design and methods, and (c) outcomes. The findings are framed and discussed through a practice-base teacher education lens. Implications for teacher education research and practice are discussed. Limitations of the current research base as well as future directions for research in this area are also discussed.
