"I Do See Missed Opportunities": Preschool Educators Reflect on Language Interactions During Stimulated Recall Interviews

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This study investigated the presence, nature, and type of educators’ reflections when viewing a recent observational video and participating in a stimulated recall interview (SRI) about their decision-making. Ten early childhood educators participated in two observations and subsequent SRIs. Reflections were present in all but one interview and ranged in complexity, with the majority at a lower, descriptive level. Content themes included: evaluating practice, connecting to past experience, describing instructional planning, describing future adjustments, considering the responsibilities of the profession, habituation, and collaboration. Reflections oriented toward the past outnumbered those oriented toward future practice; educators may need support to translate reflective thinking into instructional planning. Implications for practice, including teacher education, and implications for future research are discussed.
