In the recent past there has been a significant growth in diversity management positions particularly at the school/college level. This qualitative study seeks to understand the strategies, social networks, resources, and symbolic gestures necessary for the success of academic diversity officers (ADOs), especially during transitional times. Preliminary findings conclude that organizational structure contributes to legitimacy of diversity efforts amongst college constituents, political dynamics and relationships are necessary for intentional coalition-building, and success matrices can be difficult to define but essential in academic contexts.
