Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Teachers' professional identity is at the core of teaching profession(Beauchamp & Thomas, 2009), and reflection is a major way for the professional identity development (Walkington, 2005). Hence, this study explores how teachers' professional identities develop in the context of a teacher learning community, which takes reflection as a major learning principle(Au, 2002; So, 2013). As a result of analyzing the narratives of two teachers, teachers’ professional identity development in the community was a process of integration of the sub-identities with student-centered orientation and at the same time a process of integration with the personal identity. This study suggests that the educational philosophical texts contribute to teacher’s professional identity development by promoting active reflection in a teacher learning community.
