This paper presents the results of a study, sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation, that examines teacher decision-making and leadership within schools. Our study focuses on the role of teachers in school leadership decisions and the relationship between teacher leadership and student achievement. This paper directly addresses the focus of Section 2 of Division K: teacher leadership within and beyond the classroom. Our source of data is the Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning Survey. The results of our statistical analyses show that after controlling for school background characteristics, schools with higher levels of teacher leadership had significantly higher student achievement. However, the data also show that some areas of teacher leadership are more strongly related than others to student achievement.
