Students enrolling with disabilities at postsecondary institutions often times refuse to disclose or self-identify themselves based on the previous oppressive experiences as being labeled as special needs students. Many student athletes attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCS’s) choose not to self-identify themselves due the stigmatization of being an “academically low student.” This qualitative narrative inquiry study will examine the journey of learning experiences of five student athletes with physical or learning disabilities attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Texas. This qualitative study will also seek to determine if the knowledge, experience, and confidence of disability service staff members affect the matriculation and retention of self-identifying students with disabilities requesting accommodations at 8 Texas colleges and universities.
