Since the 2016 election, changes to policies and procedures, as well as divisive rhetoric from both conservative and liberal politicians have resulted in a challenging political climate. For Catholic schools, which in many areas of the country serve a large number of marginalized students, the changes in political climate have been felt acutely and addressed publicly. Yet, little is known about how students and teachers are being affected by the changes in political climate in their classrooms. This study examines Catholic K-12 teachers’ perceptions of the influence of the political climate on students and their roles in supporting students during times of stress. Findings highlight the need for professional development in understanding laws and policies and identifying resources for families.
