Black parents are often viewed as disconnected and unconcerned about the educational process that contributes to the success of their children in school. Consequently, the research regarding their engagement is approached from a deficit perspective. The goal of this paper was to address the shortcomings in the contextual examination parent STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) engagement (BPSE). Grounded in theories of ecological parent engagement and culture as practice, a newly developed instrument - the Black Parent-STEM Engagement Questionnaire (BP-SEQ) - was developed and used to confirm the BPSE construct. Instrument validation and findings among parents of identified gifted Black students support the theoretical construct of BPSE, which warrants recognition of the multidimensionality of Black parent engagement.
