Learning to Teach Teachers: Pedagogical Models for Teacher Educators

Abstract

This paper explores pedagogies of teacher education. The data were collected during a year-long teacher education learning series. Teacher educators participated in non discipline specific sessions about pedagogies for teacher preparation. Data included observations of each session and a focus group of teacher educators. Data were analyzed and translated into seven pedagogical models for teacher educators: 1) talking about race; 2) coaching for dispositions development; 3) practicing mindfulness; 4) deconstructing academic language; 5) attuning to trauma; 6) building and sustaining relationships in community engagement activities; and 7) transforming youth’s identities through critical inquiry. These pedagogical models provide a potential means to further develop the teacher educator pedagogical knowledge base and to guide the development of future teacher educators.
