Pedagogy to Promote Asset Thinking From Community-Engaged Learning

• In Event: Preservice Teachers' Experiences in Community-Based Field Experiences to Expand Asset Thinking

Abstract

Preservice teachers bring perceptions about marginalized groups into teacher education programs. Through a community-engaged learning experience, 25 preservice teachers prepared and then interacted in a HUD housing community. Pedagogy was designed to illuminate deficit and asset thinking of the students. Asset thinking was a challenging for students who were not able to be self-critical.
