Successful Principal Leadership for Equitable Educational Opportunities: A Cross-Case Comparison in High-Needs Schools

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Park Central Hotel New York, Floor: Ballroom Level, Forum

Abstract

This qualitative cross-case comparison illuminated principal practices and processes as well as district supports that contributed to the academic success of students in two of the district’s high-need elementary schools. In each of these schools, over 88% were Latino students, over 85% were children from low-income families, and over 36% were English learners; yet, for five years, both schools’ ratings exceeded the target for the state. This study identified the practices and supports that contributed to equity and excellence. Findings identified the vital importance of focusing clearly on critical thinking, engagement, and high expectations; engaging parents as partners; ongoing team learning with structures for collaboration; building support systems to ensure students success; and modeling a growth mindset and asset approach.
