A Professional Planning Partnership With Boundaries: A Closer Look at Mentoring Relationships

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

The final internship is an opportunity for teacher candidates to “learn in and from practice” (Darling-Hammond et al., 2005, p. 401) under the guidance of a mentor teacher. Essentially, mentor teachers establish the internship’s “affective and intellectual tone” (Feiman-Nemser, 2012, p. 205), and consequently a productive mentoring relationship is an influential aspect of the internship. This paper focuses on the unique nuances of the mentoring relationship for a mentor-intern pair with very differing personal beliefs and identities. The sessions shares how their collaborative attendance at a summer institute assisted them in identifying aligned professional beliefs and personal boundaries that contributed to the development of a co-teaching partnership during the internship.
