Examining the Impact of Race and Class on the Retention of Urban Trained Teachers

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

America is more racially and ethnically diverse than any other time in U.S. history. As the classroom of students continues to grow more diverse, White middle class females dominate the teaching force. Racially and economically diverse students are being met by teachers who often do not feel prepared to teach them. Teacher preparation programs are making efforts to address this concern and increase teacher retention efforts. Low attrition rates of teachers are particularly acute in urban areas. The study we conducted and report in this presentation uses social learning theory as a theoretical framework to understand the teachers. This is done by examining the teachers’ background experiences, and interests that may mediate candidates professional learning, development, and career choices.
