Abstract

The Health Systems Science (HSS) exam and curricular framework was created to better articulate and assess practice needs within medical education that focus on collaborative and systems-based practice. This study reviewed examination development and investigated if students trained in HSS performed better than those who received no training or had not completed training in the four content areas assessed by the exam. Schools administered the exam during 2016-2017 for formative assessment of students and evaluation of educational interventions in HSS. One-way analysis of variance was conducted and all total test and content area group means by test purpose were statistically significantly different. The results indicate that the exam is a useful tool for assessing student performance in HSS.
