Two research teams of current YPAR students (who are also 10th grade students in New York City Public Schools) explore their data and findings in deep discussion with session participants and contemplate moving from research to change while also reflecting on the process and its effect on them. In keeping with the theme for this call, the research teams will “foster civil deliberation” on the two key areas of research: representation in media and rape culture. Theoretical frameworks taken up by youth researchers include critical frameworks (Freire, 1973; Girls for Gender Equity, 2011; Martin, 2003) including gender theories (Butler, 2011; Milestone & Meyer, 2012). Methods used by the youth researchers include observation, interview, survey, focus group, and more creative methods including communal art-making.
