With memory comes responsibility. This paper uses a lens of Critical Whiteness and memory studies to analyze the ways in which Charleston, SC remembers and presents the past to residents and visitors. An analysis of four sites leads to a discussion of our responsibility to address our history, even the parts some of us would rather forget ever happened, in efforts to grapple with the hauntings of the past such that we can cultivate a more inclusive future.
