Digital reading has been described as comprising both comprehension and problem solving component skills. Using PISA 2012 data (N=58,648), we analyze the combined effects of problem solving and comprehension skills on navigation behavior and digital reading performance. We show that both comprehension and problem solving skills, and their interaction independently predict digital reading performance both directly, and indirectly through navigation behavior. The interaction between comprehension and problem solving points to a compensatory function of problem solving skills, meaning that proficient navigation and digital reading are positively predicted by problem solving skill especially in weak comprehenders.
