Creating Spaces of Empowerment: Black and Latina Graduate Students Navigate the White Academy

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

In this paper, I examine the gendered experiences of exclusion and institutional marginalization of both Black and Latina female graduate students, as well as their agency and resistance. While this paper includes examples of being excluded, it primarily focuses on how graduate women of color navigate through their PhD programs. From a critical race feminist perspective, I document how women of color contest the white academy, and how they create empowering spaces.
