STEM-ing the Tide of RISE-ing Teacher Attrition Through a Collaborative Action Research Summer Internship

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This study examines the participation of STEM undergraduates in collaborative action research (CAR), as they fulfill their roles as interns at informal science education facilities. A shortage of STEM students, teachers and professionals in the U.S., is considered a threat to the Nation’s global economic standing. A short supply of quality STEM teachers has been given much of the blame. This CAR answers calls for proactive approaches for halting STEM teacher attrition, by engaging undergraduates in teaching and learning experiences during a summer internship. Findings suggest interns have shown the ability to recognize effective teaching strategies and incorporate them into their practice as a result of their observations, experiences and participation in CAR within a COP.
