Critical Discourse Analysis has disregarded—both theoretically and methodologically—the active role that listeners take on during interactions, instead focusing on how listeners are influenced (and positioned) by speakers. Attending to this gap deepens our understanding of the “contours of interactions” (Tedlock, 1998) and thus helps us better understand and enact discursive moves towards emancipation. The study focuses on interactional classroom data from the celebrated school film, Entre les Murs (2008). I detail a methodological approach to CDA, rooted in traditional theoretical frames of discourse, which takes on listening as a unit of analysis.
