Relationship Between Background Factors and Students' Achievement in Selected Public Schools of Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract

This study purposed to understand factors related to public school grade eighth student test scores conducted yearly by Sukkur IBA University under a government funded project in Pakistan.
Correlation coefficients were created on student test scores and survey scores for different background variables of teachers, head teachers, and students.
Results show a weak but significant correlation between three background variables of head teachers i-e feedback to parents (.21), urgency of decision making (.16), and administration style (.20). Similarly, teachers’ academic qualification were found negatively correlated (-.14); whereas, professional qualification (.13) and motivation (.08) were found positively correlated.
Results are analyzed and discussed in the context of public schooling in Pakistan and suggestions are made for relevant stakeholders.
