High-Leverage Teaching Practice: Interdisciplinary Approach to Promote Intercultural and Communicative Competence in Foreign Language Education

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

In response to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' initiative and the gap existing in analyzing High-leverage Teaching Practices (HLTP) in World Language (WL) classrooms, this study investigated exemplary WL teachers' instructional practices in K-12 WL classrooms through a video corpus from Annenberg video library of WL teaching. The study showcased how two exemplary world language teachers, one in Spanish and one in German, incorporated science and mathematics to promote students’ intercultural and communicative competence in WL. An HLTP is identified and broken down into instructional moves illustrating the way in which the practice was achieved.
