Although much attention has been given to the recruitment and retention of teachers of Color, little is known about how we might prepare these teachers to remain in the teaching profession and teach children from historically marginalized communities in equitable ways. Existing research continues to highlight the ways that preservice teachers of Color are often silenced, Othered, and rendered invisible in their teacher education programs. This paper examines the ways that preservice teachers of Color made sense of and negotiated their identities and experiences during their teacher preparation. The counternarratives of these teachers serve as a knowledge base for an emerging framework for culturally responsive teacher education practices, as well as the possibilities and tensions that arise with such practices.
