Developing and Testing an Intermediate Concept Measure for Teaching

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 2

Abstract

Scholars have highlighted the scarcity of empirical research on the moral development of pre-service and inservice teachers (Sanger and Osguthorpe, 2011). This problem is the motivation for developing an intermediate concept measure (TICM) for teaching to assess moral reasoning in preservice teachers. The Neo-Kohlbergian approach to moral reasoning development maintains that intermediate concepts lie between bedrock moral schemas and professional codes of ethics and deal with issues of confidentiality, competence, informed consent, allocation of resources and professional autonomy (Rest and Narvaez, 1994). Following the system for developing the dental and adolescent ICM (Bebeau and Thoma, 1999; Thoma, Derryberry and Crowson, 2013), this paper proposes the development and preliminary testing of an ICM for teachers.
