Critical Challenges and Opportunities for School Leaders and Educators in Community Schools

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

Full-service community schools are increasingly implemented across the nation to better engage families, recognize the assets of minoritized groups and address racial disparities and inequities. While much of the discourse regarding community schools centers on nurturing students through additional community-school partnerships, less attention has been paid to the implications of community schools for classroom teachers. This critical case study brings to the fore the complicated role and relationships of educators within community school spaces. Such analysis is particularly merited given the expansion of FCSC across the nation and with the reauthorization of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which highlights FSCS as an exemplar model and calls for the increased expansion of community schools across the nation.
