Talk About Texts in High School Content-Area Classrooms in New Zealand

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Fifth Floor, Room 5.02

Abstract

The paper will report results from a design-research project that sought to identify and improve patterns of talk about text in six Year 12 (Grade 11) content-area classrooms. The two year study was a collaborative partnership between the author and six content-area teachers of English Language Arts (ELA), biology, chemistry, health, and physical education. The teachers worked in two public high schools in Auckland, New Zealand that serve low socio-economic status communities and where most students are Māori (indigenous) or Pasifika (from Pacific Islands backgrounds).
