American Students' Friendships With International Students

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Prior research on friendships between American and international students has generally focused on the experiences of international students. However, little attention has been given to factors related to American students’ international friendships. This study examined the determinants of American students' friendships with international students. Using data from WNS and IPEDS, we found that students who placed high value on interacting with diverse peers before entering college tended to have more international friends. We further found that students' individual and institutional experiences are associated with their tendency to build international friendships. Findings suggest that policymakers should consider simultaneously promoting diversity value and opportunities to meet students from diverse backgrounds through activities for both American and international students.
